Thieves Skimming, Wiretapping and Blowing Up Their Way to ATM Riches

ATM Security Under Brutal Assault

Brian Krebs of Krebsonsecurity.com has provided an update on ATM skimming innovations that thieves are using to capture card information and personal PINs. A new “insert skimmer” device that thieves place into the ATM card slot is practically invisible to the average customer as they swipe their card at the machine.

The thieves are also using cameras hidden inside fake fire alarms or behind convex mirrors to capture a customer’s PIN keystrokes. Financial institutions are even seeing “ATM Wiretapping” as thieves cut small holes in the ATM and attach tiny card readers within the ATM. The holes are covered by decals to disguise them.

Of course, if any of those hi-tech approaches is too much trouble for the thief, they can resort to brute force by blowing up the machine itself or using military grade firepower to open it up. Apparently, as Krebs reports, this is becoming a popular way to grab the money out of the machine in some countries.
