It’s that time of year again and hurricane season is off to a fast start. Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. We not only have to prepare at home but also in the workplace.
2017 and 2018 were active catastrophe seasons. This just might be to our benefit in terms of companies already having an emergency response plan in place. If not, employers need to take the initiative NOW and create a plan to prepare for the unpredictable.
Experts are predicting a more active hurricane season year with 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. With that said, you need to remember it’s just as important to update and test your business emergency plan as it is to have one. This will help minimize interruption to your operation.
To help you prepare, the National Hurricane Survival Initiative (NHSI) has prepared a checklist for businesses that can help with your planning process. The three main steps that the NHSI discuss in their checklist are:
- Protect property
- Protect important documents and information
- Keep a preparedness checklist
For additional information relating to these steps from NHSI click here. For more information about your business’ survival guide, download FEMA’s Business Toolkit or FEMA’s “Every Business Should Have a Plan” booklet for tips and further examples of steps you can take to prepare your business.
Remember, the best way to prepare for a hurricane is before hurricane season starts. So if you or your company are not prepared – act NOW!
