When Directors Become a Digital Security Risk
For years, organizations have focused cybersecurity efforts on protecting networks, systems, and employees. Today, however, a new risk is emerging: cybercriminals are increasingly targeting board members and directors themselves through sophisticated AI-enabled scams.
Artificial intelligence has made it easier than ever for criminals to create convincing impersonations using publicly available information. By leveraging social media, company websites, executive biographies, earnings calls, and other digital content, bad actors can craft highly personalized messages, emails, voice calls, and even deepfake videos designed to deceive trusted decision-makers.
Recent research cited by Korn Ferry found that organizations are experiencing a growing number of deepfake-related attacks, with executives and board members frequently among the primary targets. In many cases, attackers pose as trusted colleagues, advisors, or business associates in an attempt to obtain confidential information, authorize transactions, or gain access to company systems.
Why This Matters?
Board members often have access to some of an organization’s most sensitive information, including strategic plans, merger and acquisition activity, financial data, executive communications, and corporate governance materials. Because of their visibility, authority, and access to confidential information, directors are attractive targets for cybercriminals seeking to exploit trust within an organization and gain access to valuable corporate assets or information.

Risk Mitigation Takeaways:
Now is an important time to revisit risk management strategies:
- Educating directors on emerging AI-driven threats
- Verifying unusual requests through a secondary predetermined communication channel
- Limiting unnecessary public disclosure of personal and professional information
- Including directors in cybersecurity awareness and incident response programs
- Establishing protocols for verifying sensitive requests, even when they appear to come from trusted sources
As AI technology continues to evolve, cybersecurity is no longer solely an IT issue. It is a governance and enterprise risk issue that requires awareness and vigilance at every level of the organization, including the boardroom.
